Deciding on a wedding cake design can seem like a daunting concept. You know you want something that looks stunning, but where do you start with the design process?
You may be at the early stages of your wedding planning journey and not started to look into the possibilities yet, but once you do you will soon realise that the choices are endless. Times have past where the majority of wedding cakes look the same, with a bit of piping and a bride and groom topper (not to say you can't still have these things, in fact piped cakes are making a come back) boundaries are constantly being pushed. You may want something that is completely unique and quirky or something that is simple and elegant, what is important is that your final design reflects you both as a couple.
Take inspiration from everywhere
The inspiration for your cake can come from almost anywhere, there are so many possibilities the sky is the limit. Although you want guests to be wowed, you want to look at your cake on your wedding day and think "that is so us". You are after all one of a kind and your cake should be too, incorporating your interests, fashion styles and even your personalities. You can get really creative with your design, including aspects of your wedding decor can really pull everything together. Think about colours, flower arrangements and even the style of your invitations. If you are struggling with where to start Pinterest is definitely one of the top go to platforms, inspiration is in abundance . Most importantly consider a cake designer that can create a bespoke design that really shows who you are.
Your Venue
What venue have you chosen for your wedding? Having a cake that will compliment it's surroundings is pretty important, you want everything to come together in harmony. The chances that the style of cake that appeals to you will also be one that fits perfectly at your venue are pretty high, but it's still something to think about. Perhaps you are getting married at a Manor House so a cake with sharp edges and beautiful sugar flowers will be for you, or maybe it's a rural barn so something a little more rustic and natural will be the route you take.
Where and how will your cake be displayed?
This brings me to something that a lot of couples don't think about, location. Hours and hours have been spent designing your perfect cake so to have it hidden away in the corner of a room is not letting your cake shine. Think about where would be the best positioning? You want your cake to have the best backdrop but also where your guests get to enjoy and marvel at your stunning cake. If its a neutral backdrop then you're not tied to certain colours or textures, but if it's in-front of a busy wallpaper for example, you don't want a design that's going to get lost and not stand out in all its glory. Wedding cakes are a piece of art and should be displayed as such. A stunning painting looks great hung on a wall but when put in a frame it comes to life, cakes are the same. There are so many options of cake stands, finding the right one will really set your cake off and make some beautiful photos.
Flavours
Most wedding cake designers have cake taster boxes so you will get to taste some of their most popular flavours before confirming what you want. It can be really hard to decide on your favourites, especially if your cake designer has so many to choose from. Generally speaking, wedding cakes are several tiers high so there is nothing to stop you having each tier a different flavour. This means not only does it make your decision making that little bit easier, but also you will be able to offer all your guests something they will love.
Pick the right supplier for your wedding cake design
You want to make sure your supplier is someone you connect with and will be on the same page through out the whole process. Most wedding cake designers will have a particular niche and style; for example if you are looking to have sugar flowers it is important that they have expertise in this area. Do a little research in to cakes they have previously made, have they created designs that you love and are in a style similar to what you envisage yours to be? If you have chosen the right wedding cake maker or designer they will be able to put everything together from your wish list and even suggest ideas you hadn't even thought of yet.
Getting inspiration together for the design of you cake does not have to be overwhelming. Sit back and think about what is important to you. Is it the overall look of the cake? you want all the bells and whistles and are happy to pay a little extra to get it. Maybe its scrumptious flavours? this aspect is what gets you really excited, giving your guests a real treat in the evening. Perhaps the cake isnt the most important thing to you and you are wanting a cake on a budget. There is no right or wrong answer, as long as you get everything from your cake that you want and you are happy with the outcome.
