What budget couple are we? What do I want to spend on my wedding cake?
This may feel like a tricky one to answer as there are so many variables involved. If you have only just started looking into finding a cake designer, you will be yet to realistically set a budget. Perhaps you have never even bought a bespoke cake before, or it’s been a long time since you have so you are completely out of touch with pricing.
What budget couple are we?
There will be certain elements that will be really important to you as a couple and will play a big part on your special day. Deciding on what budget couple you are at the beginning of your wedding journey, will help you decide where is best to distribute costs.
No two couples are the same. Having a small intimate wedding with close loved ones could mean that a smaller cake is all that’s required. Some like a much larger wedding with an abundance of guests and a 5 tiered cake.
You will most likely find you fit into one of the following types of couples;
Budget isn’t so much of an issue. They want a cake that really stands out from the crowd and if they have to spend a little more to get exactly what they want then they are happy to do so.
Having a cake is important to this couple, they want something to fit in with their theme and venue but have to tighten the purse strings a little and understand that they might have to go without a few of their initial elements.
They don’t even really like cake but feel they should have something for photos and to give their guests. They don’t want to spend much as long as there is something to put on display.
Which are you? How important is your wedding cake to you?
What do I want to spend on my wedding cake?
I often wonder how couples come up with their budget, even before speaking to a wedding cake designer. There seems to be this stigma with the cost of wedding cakes. I think maybe people just don’t realise the amount of work that goes in to them? Being a wedding cake designer requires a lot of talent, skill and of course they provide a bespoke service. Generally the more experienced and reputable the designer, the more expensive their cakes will be. Ingredients may be of better quality and the finished product be to a higher standard. Of course there are cheaper options out there, but you will have to compromise somewhere. Maybe their sugar flowers aren’t as realistic, the fondant on the cake isn’t as flawless or the sponge just doesn’t taste as good. After all you pay for what you get.
One thing to remember is it is a bespoke service tailored to individual couples. From the moment your designer replies to your first email up until you see your finished cake, days of work would have been put into your design and of course this is all reflected in the cost of your cake.
Have a quick look at some of your local/recommended cake designer websites. Most will give you a rough guide to starting prices and any extra elements will have an extra cost. Don’t be afraid to contact them for a rough price based on a picture you have seen, most will be happy to assist with this.
Don’t forget photos of your cake with remain in your wedding album for you to cherish forever, so it’s important to get a cake that you love and suits your budget.
